Julia Dorothy Coover founded the Coover Foundation in 1992 to honor her husband's memory, and the Missouri woman has since awarded more than $8 million to rural communities across her service area.

The foundation, managed by Commerce Trust, recently awarded $220,000 in grants to 14 nonprofits to address the epidemic of loneliness and social isolation by creating meaningful ways to connect people with their communities, the Joplin Globe reports.

The Breast Cancer Foundation of the Ozarks received a $13,017 grant from the Community Foundation of the Ozarks to provide wellness events for breast cancer survivors and their caregivers in the Branson and Joplin areas.

"The past couple of years at BCFO, we've seen more and more need in our clients to not just have the really practical financial supportbut more emotional support as well," says Megan Garbee, with the BCFO.

"It really helps that healing process when you can connect with someone who's been through what you've been through."
